Pre-authorization, also known as pre-auth or authorization hold, is a temporary reservation of funds on a credit or debit card to ensure payment for a future transaction. It’s essentially a hold placed on a specific amount, not an actual charge. This practice is common in various industries like hotels, car rentals, and medical services.
Here’s a breakdown:
How it works:
A business (like a hotel) requests a pre-authorization from the card issuer, indicating they want to hold a certain amount of funds to cover potential charges.
Purpose:
Pre-authorizations help businesses ensure they can collect payment for services or goods, even if the final amount isn’t known at the time of the initial request. They also help reduce fraud and chargebacks.
Examples:
Hotels: Pre-authorize to cover potential incidentals like room service or damage to the room.
Car rentals: Pre-authorize to cover potential damages or fuel costs.
Medical services: Pre-authorization from insurance is required before certain procedures or medications are covered.
Duration:
Pre-authorization holds typically last for a specific period (e.g., a few days for hotels, a week or more for car rentals) and then either get released or converted into a full charge.
Benefits:
Reduced risk of fraud and chargebacks: Businesses are more confident in collecting payment.
Improved cash flow management: Businesses know how much revenue to expect.
Simplified payment process: Less manual billing and collection.
Customer assurance: Customers know the service provider has confirmed funds are available.
The pre-authorization is NOT a charge.
La Veranda of Mykonos, reserves the right to check the validity of your credit card given and to pre-authorize your card prior your arrival with the reservation amount.
This may happen once or several times until your reservation, depending the date of your reservation. ( i.e.: we pre-authorize once if reservation is next month or about every month if the reservation is later – July, August etc)
Please ask your bank for details, if you are not familiar with the term.
We apologize for any inconvenience, and thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
