Armenistis Lighthouse (Faros Armenistis) built in 1891 stands in its silence, as a tribute to the rich maritime history of Mykonos island while remaining fully functional today.

Situated on the north-western part of the island, at Fanari area, around 6.5 kilometers from Chora (Mykonos town) on the north coast road of the island, the lighthouse overlooks the stretch of sparkling blue water between Mykonos and the neighboring island of Tinos.

Its strategic position offers scenic views of the surrounding areas and is well worth visiting to get a sense of the island’s fascinating history and enjoy its spectacular beauty.

The decision to build the Armenistis Lighthouse was prompted by the sinking of the British steamship Volta in 1887 off the north coast of the island. Eleven people lost their lives in that unfortunate incident. Steps had to be taken to avoid this type of tragedy from happening again, and by 1891 the 19 meter tall lighthouse was standing as a guiding beacon to incoming ships.

The mechanism used to provide the light was designed by French company Sauter Lemonier and received an award at the International Exhibition in Paris at the time. This mechanism remained in use until 1983 when it was replaced by electrical equipment. Visitors can view the original lighting machinery in the courtyard of the Aegean Maritime Museum in the center of Mykonos Town.

Nowadays, the region of Armenistis with its imposing maritime emblem signifies the old, traditional times of the Greek and international sea transportation, the light of hope at the end of each personal, or not, journey, as well as the essence security and safe guidance through one’s difficulties.

Undoubtedly, those who know its long history and its symbolic value spend hours gazing at the unique, rugged landscape of Armenistis from the stone-fenced courtyard of the lighthouse. Amateur photographers try to capture the eerie moment of a dying, but proudly standing symbol when the setting sun rigorously brushes in fire red tones the clear canvas of the sky. Potential couples give their first kiss under the silenced horizon and tourists keep visiting it, trying to absorb the historical aura of the area.

You should definitely include the lighthouse as one of your destinations on an island tour!

The best beaches are on the south side of the island and sheltered from the prevailing northern wind. Many beaches, even the more family-orientated, are often populated with the ‘European’ style of sunbathing – i.e. topless. Most of the beaches have tavernas and restaurants and are well equipped with with deck chairs and parasols.

Some of the most popular ones are:

-Psarou, (south coast, 5km from Mykonos Town). This up market beach is popular amongst Greeks.

From the 17th century an increasing number of European travelers visited Delos, sketching its ruins and recording precious information. In 1873 the French Archaeological School at Athens began the excavations that continue to this day, uncovering a large sector of the once large and affluent city with sanctuaries, harbors, market places and residential quarters.

Mykonos Town (Chora) is a stunningly picturesque Cycladic town with a maze of tiny streets and whitewashed steps lanes, houses and churches, gathered around its harbor in the middle of a wide bay. It is famed as a cosmopolitan destination amongst the Greek islands and widely recognized as one of the great travel Mecca’s. Although the streets are lined with little shops, boutiques, art galleries, cafes, stylish bars and restaurants, Mykonos Town has not completely lost its identity. Despite the island’s rapid growth and development, it’s traditional Cycladic architectural style and character has remained firmly intact, thanks to the island’s strict building regulations.

Mykonos tends to be extremely crowded with visitors in July and August. The best time to visit Mykonos is May through June, or September through mid-October.

Attractions in Mykonos Town

-The Windmills, are one of the most recognized landmarks of Mykonos. Once this island was a great producer of wheat and bread. The area of the windmills has a splendid view on Little Venice and is the most popular place in Mykonos to watch the sunset.

-Little Venice, a district located at the sea, famous for its picturesque medieval two and three storey houses, which stand like a wall above the sea, and their colorful wooden balconies. Little Venice is one of the most beautiful and romantic places in the whole of Mykonos and offers a fantastic sunset.

-Panagia Paraportiani, of all the churches on Mykonos, the most impressive is Panagia Paraportianí, a true Byzantine jewel. This whitewashed church, which building dates back to 1425 and was not completed until the 17th century, is the most popular and most photographed of all the churches on Mykonos.

-Petros the Pelican, the island’s mascot, can sometimes be found at the waterfront or even up in town. Now there are three pelicans inhabiting the island. This means that the Petros you meet, can be a Petra. Well, this is Mykonos.

The airlines had lost our luggage and Marina spent three days calling the airline for us so that we could enjoy our stay in Mykonos.

Andreas picked us up and dropped us at the port. Not only that but he graciously took us to the airport when the airline claimed it was there. He stood by us and assisted us by conversing in Greek with the airport personnel.

I don’t think we ever would have located our luggage and had such a wonderful stay in Mykonos if it weren’t for these two.

To go on about the property itself, La Veranda is an absolutely beautiful hotel overlooking Mykonos Town. The breathtaking views coupled with the relaxing pool area and the hospitable staff will surely make for a memorable stay.

Starting the City-and Island tour by walking the small and narrow streets, we have many possibilities to take nice photographs in the early morning, quiet city.

We get orientation and information in the labyrinth of the old town as well as impressions of the small port and the churches in town. Of course we will also see the famous windmills and find Petros the Pelican, the mascot of Mykonos.

Meeting time from 09.30 am at the bus / boat stop at Ornos Beach. We start at 10 am to cruise along the South Coast and relax on our traditional Greek Kaiki style ship while passing closely all the beautiful beaches of the South Coast. If weather permits we cross over to the uninhabited island of Dragonissi with its caves and stunning rock formations; these are full of minerals and create the most amazing colours in the water. With some luck we see the wild mountain goats and eagles.

Lunch consists of a personal Greek salad, Tzatziki, bread, oven roast chicken with potatoes or a vegetarian pasta dish, 1/4 l of wine and water.
